For many newcomers arriving in Canada, professional success depends on more than education, experience or technical ability. Building the right relationships, understanding the local job market and gaining access to professional networks can be just as important.

This was the reality faced by the founders of TechTamil, a Canadian non-profit organization created to connect Tamil professionals working in technology and related industries.

After arriving in Canada with professional experience, ambition and a desire to contribute, the founders quickly recognized a common challenge. Although the Tamil community was supported by several established cultural and community organizations, there was no dedicated platform bringing together Tamil technology professionals, students, entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

“Every handshake builds a bridge to tomorrow’s opportunity.”

A Community Born from Shared Experience

The idea for TechTamil began during an informal conversation over coffee, when the founders discussed the obstacles they had personally experienced while trying to establish themselves in Canada.

One question changed the direction of that conversation: instead of waiting for opportunities, why not create a community that brings together Tamil professionals, shares knowledge and opens doors for others facing the same barriers?

That conversation led to the formation of TechTamil, an organization focused on professional networking, mentorship, career development and community impact.

Creating Opportunities Through Connection

TechTamil brings together Tamil professionals from fields including software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, design, engineering, product development, digital marketing and entrepreneurship.

The organization provides opportunities for members to connect with industry professionals, exchange knowledge and build relationships that may support their professional growth. Its activities include networking events, career workshops, webinars, mentorship opportunities, technical discussions and volunteer-led community programs.

TechTamil also creates a space for experienced professionals to support students, newcomers and individuals transitioning into technology careers. Many internationally trained professionals arrive with strong qualifications but limited local networks or familiarity with Canadian hiring practices. Students and recent graduates may also find it difficult to identify mentors or connect with professionals already working in their chosen fields.

Through workshops and community events, participants can learn from professionals who have already navigated these challenges. Sessions have covered career development, resume preparation, interview skills, emerging technologies and professional branding.

“The goal is not only to help Tamil professionals succeed, but to create a culture where success is shared.”

Technology With a Community Purpose

While professional development remains central to TechTamil’s mission, the organization has also expanded its focus to address wider community needs.

One of its major initiatives is Thandora by TechTamil, a digital literacy program designed to help seniors use technology safely and confidently.

As banking, healthcare, government services and everyday communication increasingly move online, seniors who lack digital skills may face greater difficulty accessing essential services. They may also be more vulnerable to online scams, misinformation, privacy risks and social isolation.

Thandora Helps Seniors Navigate the Digital World

Thandora by TechTamil uses a reverse mentoring model in which technology professionals volunteer to teach seniors practical digital skills. Sessions are designed to be simple, patient and hands-on, allowing participants to learn at their own pace and ask questions in a supportive environment.

Workshop topics include smartphone basics, WhatsApp, video calling, online safety, cybersecurity, scam awareness, artificial intelligence, online banking, digital shopping and access to government and healthcare services.

The program currently serves seniors in Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, Scarborough and Markham. TechTamil works with local seniors’ associations and community organizations and is continuing to expand Thandora into additional communities so that more seniors can access practical, culturally relevant digital literacy support.

The initiative is intended not only to improve technical knowledge, but also to help seniors become more independent and confident in their daily lives. For volunteers, the program provides an opportunity to use their professional skills in a meaningful way while building relationships across generations.

The sessions also address the growing number of scams targeting seniors through phone calls, text messages, email and social media. By teaching participants how to recognize suspicious messages, protect personal information and verify online content, Thandora aims to reduce the risks associated with digital fraud.

“Thandora is helping seniors use technology with greater confidence, independence and safety.”

Strengthening Intergenerational Connections

Thandora’s reverse mentoring model also creates opportunities for younger professionals and seniors to learn from one another. While volunteers provide guidance on digital tools, seniors share their own experiences, knowledge and perspectives.

This exchange helps strengthen relationships across age groups and demonstrates how technology can bring communities together rather than create further separation.

For seniors who may have previously relied on family members for basic digital tasks, learning how to send messages, join video calls, access online services or identify fraudulent activity can have a significant impact on confidence and independence.

A Growing Community Network

TechTamil continues to work with professionals, volunteers, businesses, community organizations and seniors’ associations to expand its programs.

The organization’s broader goal is to create a stronger Tamil technology network in Canada while ensuring that the benefits of technology are shared across the community.

Its work reflects a model in which professional networking and community service are closely connected. By helping individuals build careers, supporting newcomers and students, and improving digital literacy among seniors, TechTamil is using the skills of its members to address needs both within the technology sector and in the wider community.

What began as a conversation between a small group of professionals has developed into a growing network built around mentorship, collaboration and service.
