How many letters are in the Tamil alphabet? தமிழில் எத்தனை எழுத்துகள் உள்ளன?
A common traditional count is 247: 12 independent vowel letters, 18 consonants, 216 combined vowel-consonant letters, and one special character, ஃ. The uyirmei letters are systematic combinations, so understanding the 30 basic vowel and consonant letters makes the larger chart easier to learn.
The word “alphabet” is commonly used by beginners searching for Tamil letters. Tamil writing is an abugida: consonant letters carry an inherent vowel that can be changed with vowel signs.
