How to Write and Type Tamil: Vowel Signs and Keyboard Basics தமிழில் எழுதவும் தட்டச்சு செய்யவும்

Tamil consonants combine with vowel signs to create written syllables. Practise how the signs change the written form, then choose a Tamil keyboard layout on your device. Keyboard names and setup steps depend on the operating system.

Start with the written pattern, not the keyboard keys: one base consonant can take different vowel signs. For typing, Tamil99 and Typewriter are two Unicode layouts offered by the Tamil Virtual Academy keyboard tools.

The pulli mark (்) shows a consonant without its inherent vowel, as in க்.
Vowel signs may appear before, after, above, below, or around a consonant in the written form.
Unicode Tamil text is designed to work across devices when a Tamil-capable font is available.

Build a letter with vowel signs உயிர்க்குறிகளால் எழுத்தை அமைக்கவும்

Start with க் and observe how different vowels change its written form.
