Tamil Vowels: Uyir Ezhuthukkal Chart தமிழ் உயிரெழுத்துகள்
Tamil has 12 independent vowel letters, called உயிரெழுத்துகள் (uyir ezhuthukkal). Uyir means “life”; the term helps learners remember that these vowel letters can stand on their own. Learn their order, notice the short and long pairs, and then see how each vowel sign joins a consonant in the uyirmei chart.
தமிழில் 12 உயிரெழுத்துகள் உள்ளன. இவை தனியாக ஒலிக்கக்கூடிய எழுத்துகள். அவற்றின் வரிசையையும் குறில், நெடில் வேறுபாட்டையும் கற்றுக்கொண்டு, உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகளில் அவை எவ்வாறு சேர்கின்றன என்பதைப் பாருங்கள்.
The transliteration below uses macrons to mark long vowels (ā, ī, ū, ē, ō). These are practical reading cues rather than exact English sound equivalents.
- அ ஆ, இ ஈ, உ ஊ, எ ஏ, ஒ ஓ are useful short-and-long pairs.
- ஐ (ai) and ஔ (au) are compound vowel sounds.
- In a combined letter, அ has no added vowel mark; the consonant carries its inherent a sound.
