Tamil Pronunciation: Vowel Length and Tamil Sounds தமிழ் உச்சரிப்பு

Tamil pronunciation becomes easier when you listen for vowel length and keep similar-looking sounds distinct. These examples use Roman transliteration as a guide; listening to a fluent speaker is the best way to learn the exact sound.

Start with short and long vowel pairs, then practise the Tamil consonant contrasts below. English spellings are approximate and do not replace listening practice.

Hold long vowels longer than their short partners: பல் (pal) and பால் (pāl) differ in vowel length and meaning.
Keep ல (l), ள (ḷ), and ழ (ḻ) distinct; ழ is a characteristic Tamil sound with no exact English equivalent.
ர (r) and ற (ṟ) are different letters in spelling, but their spoken sounds often overlap; learn these words with their meanings.

Hear the vowel length குறில், நெடில் ஒலிகள்

A short and a long vowel can change a word's meaning. Compare the written forms and say each pair aloud.

குறில், நெடில் வேறுபாட்டைக் கவனியுங்கள். உயிரொலியின் நீளம் மாறும்போது சொல்லின் பொருளும் மாறலாம்.

Tamil has several consonant letters that English speakers may initially hear as similar. ல, ள, and ழ represent distinct sounds. ர and ற are distinct letters in spelling, though their spoken sounds often merge. The pair below teaches spelling and meaning, not a universal pronunciation difference.
